spotify makes me sick

Sure it still looked like the Spotify logo, but I could feel it in my gut that something was wrong.

About a month ago an alien color revealed itself, having invaded the space on my phone where my Spotify app icon once was. Sure it still looked like the Spotify logo, but I could feel it in my gut that something was wrong.

What was likely an attempted brand refresh hastened by Apple’s announcement of a new music streaming service turned out to be an upset stomach for many of its users. Spotify listeners are a passionate people who have become comfortable with the sleek black layout that the app provided as an alternative to iTunes and Pandora. The perfect secondary color for this interface was a “broccoli green”—a derogatory name given to the original green by Spotify to try to sway opinion in favor of the new direction—which felt familiar, grounded, and calming.

What they switched it to is a radioactive green that doesn’t care to play well with others. It vibrates against every other color and appears cautionary against black which is, again, the color of the interface.

I may sound dramatic or hyper-critical, but that’s because I love the app and know I’m going to use it on daily basis for the foreseeable future. Over the same four years that have made me reticent to let go of the old Spotify green, I’ve amassed several starred songs and followed several new artists. I’ve even subscribed and created dozens of playlists which I listen to daily. Regardless of how I feel about its new color, it isn’t enough for me to take the leap to Apple Music. It may very well be a testament to the power of brand loyalty and personal investment that I refuse to leave Spotify; especially since they’re not the cheapest music streaming service and their radio stations tend to repeat songs.

As a loyalist (and not that I have much of a choice experientially) I am sure I’ll learn to live with it; like a cat allergy or eye floaters. But I won’t be happy about it.
